The 1990s: Spurs, The Umbro Stand, Swales Out and That Pitch Invasion!

Today’s 1990s flashback is from this month in 1993. It’s actually the 7 March 1993 when Manchester City faced Tottenham in the FA Cup Quarter-Final at Maine Road. It was a day that saw the media express shock at the behaviour of City’s fans when they invaded the pitch during the tie with Spurs.  They condemned the supporters without understanding the background story.  To put the record straight it’s vital the day’s events are covered correctly.  Here for subscribers is the full story of that game, including quotes from Niall Quinn and Peter Swales (from my interviews with them in the years since that day…

The 1990s: That Crosby Goal!

The series of articles covering Manchester City in the 1990s continues with a story from the opening months of 1990. On 3 March in 1990 City lost 1-0 to a controversial goal from Nottingham Forest’s Gary Crosby. Was it fair? Watch the highlights here and see what you think:

Oooh, it was one of those haunting footballing moments that lived with goalkeeper Andy Dibble for years and was something us fans could not forget whenever we went to Forest!

The 1990s: City 3 Luton 0

The series of articles covering Manchester City in the 1990s continues today with an on this day (5 March) from 1991 when the Blues defeated Luton 3-0 with goals from Niall Quinn (2) and a penalty from Clive Allen. Here’s an interesting clip from the old Saint and Greavsie show which showed the action as part of their preview of the City v Liverpool game. It’s interesting as it’s clear from this that City WERE seen as a potential challenger that season (so many people try to claim otherwise!). The 1990s was not all bad!

The 1990-91 season had included a shock managerial departure which could have disrupted the club but ultimately the Blues finished 5th, 3 points ahead of Manchester United. Here’s a 2,700 word article on that season:

The 1970s: Kiddo Header

The 1970s: Tueart Penalty as City Beat Everton 3-0

Today we have another 1970s flashback. This is of the day when a Tueart penalty helped Manchester City to a 3-0 victory over Everton. This happened at Maine Road on this day (21 February) in 1976. You can see film of that and all the goals here:

The 1970s: Victory Over Everton

An unfortunate late own goal by Mick Horswill hardly mattered as Manchester City defeated Everton 2-1 on this day (8 February) in 1975. The Blues were leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Colin Bell and Dennis Tueart. You can watch all the goals (and a Marsh opportunity!) here:

The 1970s: Booth and Hartford

Another 1970s flashback today with film of Tommy Booth and Asa Hartford both scoring for Manchester City on this day (7 February) in 1976. The Blues had gone a goal behind to Aston Villa before great work from Hartford helped to change the course of the match. All goals can be seen in this clip here:
