From The Archives: An Away Friendly At Bournemouth

Here’s an item from the collection from this day (12 February) in 1949 when Bournemouth staged a home friendly against Manchester City. This was City’s second away friendly of 1949 (after Coventry the previous month). The game ended in a 4-2 win for Manchester’s Blues and was watched by 15,046. City’s scorers were: Jack Oakes, Johnny Hart, George Smith and Andy Black. It’s not clear exactly who this letter was sent to but similar letters were sent to both the FA and the League for games like these.

The 1940s: Film of City v Chelsea 1948

There’s a wonderful film of Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup on 24 January 1948 which really needs to be seen. I’d urge everyone to watch this, even if it’s just for Frank Swift’s reaction to a decision. You’ll also see some wonderful coverage of Maine Road too. The City scorers were Billy Linacre and George Smith.

The 1940s: Manchester City 2 Bradford (Park Avenue) 1

On this day (6 May) in 1944 the North Regional League (a wartime league) game between Manchester City victory and Bradford (Park Avenue) ended in a 2-1 City victory before 5,000 at Maine Road. The City scorers were Peter Doherty (photograph) and Billy Bootle. Together with Peter Doherty, notable players in the City team that day include: Frank Swift, Billy Walsh, Jack Bray, Les McDowall, Bert Sproston and Jimmy Heale.

This was the last game of the 1943-44 season for City.

A Shock Transfer From Spurs

Today (5 November) marks the anniversary of a shock transfer of an England international from Tottenham to Manchester City only a few days before an England game. The player even travelled on the Tottenham coach to Manchester as the two teams were about to play each other. You can read the story and match reports here:

On this day in 1947 Manchester City faced Manchester United at Maine Road. This was a home game for City against their tenants United.
