The 1990s: The Derby at Maine Road AND Old Trafford

The series of articles covering Manchester City in the 1990s continues today with a reminder of the Manchester Derby played on this day (20 March) in 1993. The match ended in a 1-1 draw (City were leading 1-0 before Cantona equalised). Here’s City scorer Niall Quinn’s view of the game:

The game was the first derby at Maine Road in the Premier League that had been established that season and United would go on to win the title, so this draw was viewed as a significant result for City at the time. The attendance was 37,136 which was an absolute sellout. The new Umbro Stand (Platt Lane) had opened that month.

There were issues about ticket touts and capacity, leading to MUFC showing the match at Old Trafford too. 10,000 were reported to have watch the game there. Here are some cuttings about that.

The 1990s: Loyal Support?

A slight diversion here. The cutting above is from March 1995 and was published in a Liverpool newspaper about attendances at Anfield and Goodison. It’s not worth getting into the local support rivalry that clearly existed on Merseyside then (and probably still does today) but it is worth showing this cutting as it demonstrates that the biggest clubs haven’t always had full stadia.

People assume the 1990s was a decade of full houses but that’s not always the case. The 1994-95 season is an interesting one because there was building work at many stadia as a result of the move to all seater grounds. Manchester City averaged 22,725 which may not sound to great but the season started with City’s capacity down to less than 20,000 for several games. The capacity increased in stages, ultimately reaching about 28,000 that season but this was the first complete season of Franny Lee’s chairmanship and demand was huge.

The 1990s: Spurs, The Umbro Stand, Swales Out and That Pitch Invasion!

Today’s 1990s flashback is from this month in 1993. It’s actually the 7 March 1993 when Manchester City faced Tottenham in the FA Cup Quarter-Final at Maine Road. It was a day that saw the media express shock at the behaviour of City’s fans when they invaded the pitch during the tie with Spurs.  They condemned the supporters without understanding the background story.  To put the record straight it’s vital the day’s events are covered correctly.  Here for subscribers is the full story of that game, including quotes from Niall Quinn and Peter Swales (from my interviews with them in the years since that day…

Quinn Header v Coventry

Continuing the 1990s series here’s a game from 17 August 1991 when Manchester City’s season started with a 1-0 victory at Coventry. City wore their traditional away colours of maroon too! You can see Niall Quinn’s headed goal and the celebrations by City fans here:

The 1990s: Niall Quinn Joins The Blues

On this day (15 March) in 1990 Arsenal’s Niall Quinn joined Manchester City. It was a great, transfer deadline beating transfer and one which proved extremely popular over the months that followed. Quinn was a wonderful Irish international, going to the World Cup while with City.

The 1990s: City 3 Luton 0

The series of articles covering Manchester City in the 1990s continues today with an on this day (5 March) from 1991 when the Blues defeated Luton 3-0 with goals from Niall Quinn (2) and a penalty from Clive Allen. Here’s an interesting clip from the old Saint and Greavsie show which showed the action as part of their preview of the City v Liverpool game. It’s interesting as it’s clear from this that City WERE seen as a potential challenger that season (so many people try to claim otherwise!). The 1990s was not all bad!
