These two results tables for top flight football in November 1985 make interesting reading. I’ve included the details published today (17 November, for games played the previous day) in 1985 and also the week after’s details too. This gives an idea of what the top clubs were attracting back then. Notice West Ham’s game attracted more at home than Arsenal’s and that Liverpool were over 26,000 less than Manchester United. Arsenal’s crowd was 6,000 less than struggling Manchester City and Tottenham attracted more than Arsenal too. Reigning League champions Everton were some way ahead of the London clubs and only about 600 behind Liverpool. Obviously, these are only snapshots from two weekends but hopefully it might make those who sing songs like ‘Where Were You?’ think about the crowds at their own clubs first.

15,140 watched as Manchester City defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the City Ground on 16 November 1985. The scorers were Paul Simpson and Clive Wilson. This photo shows City ‘keeper Eric Nixon and Forest defender Aiden Butterworth and clearly City managed to end this Forest attack. Nixon kept a clean sheet that day of course!

Here’s a report, image and film from the first World Cup qualifying match played in England (from this date, 16 November, in 1949). It saw England thrash Ireland 9-2 at Maine Road. This was a historic game for obvious reasons and the match programme explained how the World Cup operated as this was the first time England had participated in the tournament.
I’m absolutely delighted to say the the incredible Manchester Corinthians have been honoured with a special recognition award at the Manchester Sports Awards 2025. Special thanks are due to Paul Hulme at MCRActive for all his efforts in making this happen. Paul has been a great supporter of all we have tried to do to recognise and promote the Corinthians’ stories over the last five years or so. He was extremely helpful when we established the Blue Plaque campaign a few years back and I know he put a lot of effort into making this award happen too.
The Corinthians are wonderful people who toured the globe promoting Manchester, football and female endeavour over a forty year period. I was sat with Corinthians who had played for the club in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. I was particularly pleased for Margaret Whitworth, Margaret Shepherd and Jan Lyons, who had worked hard over many years to get the stories of the club listened to and worked with me to get the Blue Plaque campaign established.
Altogether we managed to get 14 Corinthians at the event tonight (15 November 2025) – a fraction of the number we’ve found during my project to capture the stories of Corinthians from every season of the club’s history. Over 50 Corinthians have been interviewed by me and in December last year my wife Heidi (who played with some former Corinthians at Manchester City in the 80s and 90s) and I managed to get eighty former players/families of former players together for a Reunion at the Etihad Stadium. It was great to see them catch-up with each other.

Here’s an interesting cutting from 39 years ago today (15 November 1986). Back then live televised football matches were deemed to have an effect on attendances at games and clubs could put in a claim for compensation if they could prove their gate would normally have been higher. This article talks of Liverpool’s home game with Sheffield Wednesday… The attendance was 28,020.
Here’s some film from a Manchester City-Derby County game at Maine Road on this day (14 November) in 1970. The film has a few things to look out for including a Colin Bell goal and scenes of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, but you can also see the Invacars that used to be used by disabled people and they were allowed to park pitchside. You can see them a couple of times in this footage (look out after about 19 seconds at the top of the image) positioned in front of the Kippax/Platt Lane Corner.

It’s worth reminding ourseleves of this game from 12 November 2023 when Manchester City drew 4-4 at Chelsea. It was heralded as a great game by the media but for fans of the teams involved they tend to feel like opportunities lost or maybe great comebacks depending on which side you support. Immediately after the game in 2023 I was asked when City’s previous 4-4 draw was and I spent a few minutes thinking ‘I’ve never seen one before involving City, or have I?’ So, I then started to scour the material in my collection and was somewhat surprised to find it was against Grimsby in September 1950! Certainly many, many years before I was born.
My favourite goal in that match at Chelsea was the one Haaland scored with his er… um… er… shorts area. The City scorers were: Haaland (25 minutes pen, 47 minutes), Akanji (45+1 minutes), Rodri (86 minutes) and for Chelsea (including two City old boys): Thiago Silva (29 minutes), Sterling (37 minutes), Jackson (67 minutes), Palmer (90+5minutes pen).
Incredibly that game wasn’t the first time City had drawn 4-4 at Chelsea and, coincidentally I’d tweeted about this before the 2023 match. I never expected history to repeat itself. You can read about the earlier match via the link below. Incidentally, the game was in 1936-37 and City won the title that year – as they did in 2023-24!
