The 1970s: 1978-1979 Milan Meeting

The series of features/articles covering Manchester City in the 1970s continues with a 5,700 word article on the entire 1978-79 season – a season which saw City mount a UEFA Cup challenge and a former hero return (if only he hadn’t!). My article, like the other indepth pieces, contains material from interviews I have performed with many of the key figures – chairman, managers, players and others. This series of articles and features on Manchester City in the 1970s has been running throughout January and now into February with indepth articles some days and smaller ‘on this day’ style posts on others. The 1970s: FA Cup win at WBA

On this day (11 January) in 1977 Manchester City defeated West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in a FA Cup 3rd round replay. The original game had ended 1-1 with Kidd scoring for City at Maine Road. The goalscorer in the replay was Joe Royle. It’s well worth reading this report which highlights there was a bit of a conflict in the game too! Enjoy!

Manchester City V Real Madrid, 19 December 1979

On this day (19 December) in 1979 Manchester City’s first meeting with Real Madrid occurred. Back then it was viewed as a prestigious friendly, or at least that’s what it was supposed to be, but it turned out to be a controversial game with implications for the Blues for some time. Here’s an 1800 word article with images of that game and the controversy surrounding it.

The 1980s: Defender Caton Double Sinks Gunners

Continuing the series focusing on Manchester City in the 1980s here’s a brief reminder of Tommy Caton and a day (4 December) in 1982 when he scored twice to give City a 2-1 victory over his future club.

The photo shows central defender Caton sending a 52nd minute header past Arsenal ‘keeper George Wood, following an Asa Hartford corner. This gave City the lead at Maine Road but then five minutes from time the away team equalised. In the last minute another corner (this time from Paul Power) led to Caton leaping to send the ball home and give the Blues a 2-1 victory.

Two days later Caton was called up to the full England squad for a European Championship qualifier. Caton was a gifted defender who should have played regularly for England. Sadly, it was not to be.

The 1980s: 1980-1981 Gow, Hutchison & McDonald

The 1980s: Dalziel Signs for ‘MacCity’

Continuing the series of articles covering Manchester City in the 1980s, here’s a brief newspaper cutting announcing that City had just signed Gordon Dalziel. The newspaper was published on this day (30 November) in 1983. The reference to MacCity links to the idea that Manager Billy McNeill and his assistant, fellow Scot Jimmy Frizzell, were buying Scottish players.

There’s a lot of truth in this and McNeill explained about it at various times over the years. My 2,500 article on the 1983-84 is titled ‘Fish Supper’ because McNeill said City were so skint at the time that they could hardly buy a fish supper. Sadly, the purchases were often funded out of the money City had received for their talented young defender Tommy Caton who joined Arsenal.

John Bond Becomes MCFC Manager

On this day (17 October) in 1980 John Bond officially became the Manchester City manager. Back in November 1995 I interviewed the former Manchester City manager. At the time I was researching my in-depth history of the club called Manchester The Greatest City (later updated as Manchester The City Years).

I met John at his home and spent a good few hours with him chatting about the Blues and his career. I loved doing this interview and was always grateful for the time he gave me. He was quite frank, open and honest – which delighted me because he was a great talker. He was also happy for me to quote everything he said in the interview. I did end up quoting him extensively in the book (and in others I’ve produced) but none of the interview has ever been heard by the wider public.

You can hear the interview I did that day. In this first section he talks about the steps taken by City to appoint him; the interview (and the directors involved in that notorious filmed job interview for the City documentary in 1980-81); the signing of Tommy Hutchison, Bobby McDonald and Gerry Gow. As I said earlier, he is quite frank in his comments and that may surprise a few.
