From The Archives: An Away Friendly

Here’s an item from the collection from this day (29 January) in 1949 when Coventry City staged a home friendly against Manchester City. The game ended in a 2-1 defeat for Manchester’s Blues (Johnny Hart scored for City) and was watched by 14,779. A few notable names in that lineup: Joe Fagan (future Liverpool European Cup winning manager); Eric Westwood (a City captain who fought in Normandy); and Roy Clarke (who became a major hero and went on to manage the City Social Club). It’s not clear exactly who this letter was sent to but similar letters were sent to both the FA and the League for games like these.

The 1940s: Film of City v Chelsea 1948

There’s a wonderful film of Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup on 24 January 1948 which really needs to be seen. I’d urge everyone to watch this, even if it’s just for Frank Swift’s reaction to a decision. You’ll also see some wonderful coverage of Maine Road too. The City scorers were Billy Linacre and George Smith.

The 1940s: The 1946-47 Season

The new series on Manchester City in the 1940s continues with this feature on the 1946-47 season. This was the first league season after the war and ended with City winning the Second Division title. There were some truly significant – and well attended – games that season and future Liverpool manager Joe Fagan (photograph) made his debut this season too. Programme Flashback City V United, 20 September 1947

On this day in 1947 Manchester City faced Manchester United at Maine Road. This was a home game for City against their tenants United.

Fagan’s First

Happy New Year! On this day (1 January) in 1947 future Liverpool manager Joe Fagan made his debut as a Manchester City player in the 4-0 victory over Fulham, watched by 49,449.

The goalscorers were Andy Black (2) and Alec Herd (2)

The 4-0 victory sent City to the top of the Second Division (2nd tier) table in style.  The Blues were playing as champions and, more importantly, looked like a typical First Division club.  Here’s a contemporary report of the game:

The only problem was the weather.  Postponements dragged the season through to mid-June, by which time City started to drop a few points but it hardly mattered.  The Blues won the title with 62 points – four more than second placed Burnley.
