On This Day MCFC’s first European Trophy

On this day (29 April) 1970 Manchester City won the European Cup Winners’ Cup beating Gornik Zabrze from Poland 2-1 at the Prater Stadium in Vienna.  For those wondering, this meant that City had won a UEFA tournament years before many prominent ‘European’ teams including Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus etc. Note: The Fairs Cup was not established as a UEFA competition and had some odd entry rules (one team from a city plus initially only teams from cities that had staged trade fairs could enter, hence its title. London entered it one year!).

The following table shows the span of success between each club’s first UEFA trophy and their most recent for the 20 or so clubs with the biggest span between first and most recent European success.

Also, for subscribers, here are a few comments and feelings from supporters, players, and others affected by the Gornik final in 1970. These were gathered as part of a project I organised to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the final. As we’ve now reached the 54th anniversary they have become an even greater historical record.

A European Replay for City

In September 2021 I was in Copenhagen and, as always when I’m in a city with a football ground, I popped over to the Parken Stadium. Most fans will remember that City drew 2-2 there with FC København in February 2009. Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Ireland scored in the UEFA Cup round of 32 first leg and in the return Craig Bellamy scored twice to give the Blues a 2-1 win on the night (4-3 on aggregate). That year we progressed to the quarter finals.

However, Copenhagen’s stadium played a much earlier role in City’s European story and, as today (31 March) is the anniversary of that game, I’m publishing this article looking back at the day when the Blues played a European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final replay there.

MCFC V Gornik in 1971

On this day (10 March) in 1971 a crowd reported as 100,000 witnessed a 2-0 Manchester City defeat by Gornik in the ECWC quarter final first leg. The story of that game and the rest of the tie is available below (with video clips) for subscribers to this site.

On This Day: Manchester City V Coimbra

Progressing to a European quarter-final is always a significant milestone that needs to be celebrated. No one ever takes this sort of achievement for granted even though it is something that Manchester City has managed frequently in recent years. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, despite major success in England, reaching a European quarter-final was a bit of a rarity. So, as today is the anniversary of City’s first ever European quarter-final (4 March), I’ve written this feature looking at the first time the Blues reached a UEFA organised tournament’s quarter-final. That was in 1969-70.

The days of replays in Europe

On this day (March 31) in 1971 holders Manchester City were forced to play a European Cup Winners’ Cup game at a neutral ground. These were the days before penalty shoot outs decided ties. For subscribers to my site, here’s the story of that game:
