From The Archives: An Away Friendly

Here’s an item from the collection from this day (29 January) in 1949 when Coventry City staged a home friendly against Manchester City. The game ended in a 2-1 defeat for Manchester’s Blues (Johnny Hart scored for City) and was watched by 14,779. A few notable names in that lineup: Joe Fagan (future Liverpool European Cup winning manager); Eric Westwood (a City captain who fought in Normandy); and Roy Clarke (who became a major hero and went on to manage the City Social Club). It’s not clear exactly who this letter was sent to but similar letters were sent to both the FA and the League for games like these.

The 1940s: Film of City v Chelsea 1948

There’s a wonderful film of Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup on 24 January 1948 which really needs to be seen. I’d urge everyone to watch this, even if it’s just for Frank Swift’s reaction to a decision. You’ll also see some wonderful coverage of Maine Road too. The City scorers were Billy Linacre and George Smith.

The 1940s: Manchester City 5 Tranmere Rovers 1

On this day (13 April) in 1940 Manchester City defeated Tranmere 5-1 in the Western Regional League. This was a first team competition played during wartime. A restricted Maine Road crowd of 3,000 watched goals from City’s Bray, Herd (see image), Currier (2), and Emptage. You can read more on this wartime season below. Programme Flashback City V United, 20 September 1947

On this day in 1947 Manchester City faced Manchester United at Maine Road. This was a home game for City against their tenants United.
