On this day (23 October) in 1976 Manchester City fans first did their ‘Viking Call’. The chant eventually evolved into ‘The best team in the land and all the world’ but for some time was basically City fans doing a C-iii-ttt-yy chant to the first part of the song. You can hear the song and find out its story in this talk I did in 2022 (if you don’t want to watch the full talk, jump to about 23mins 40 seconds for the Viking Call story):

I’ve also posted an article on the Manchester City website here telling the story:

I’ve got a copy of the programme shown, as I went to the game, to subsequently find out it was the featured ‘Match of the Day’, catching the start of the programme when we got home.
The match programme features a full colour photo of the City squad posing with the 1976 League Cup, and mentions a current TalkSport morning presenter in their Reserves/Youths column.
It was a long trip there and back, and was the first time I heard the Sex Pistols on, I think, Radio Luxembourg, on the journey home.
