66 Years Ago Today The Manchester Corinthians Start Their South American Tour

On this day (11 May) in 1960 the Manchester Corinthians women’s team landed in New York at the start of their three month tour of South America (they started in New York and then flew south). As part of the decade+ long project into the club I’ve managed to identify all 29 women who participated for the tour (see below). The stories of many of these appear in Manchester Corinthians: The Authorised History and I’ve been privileged to into so many Corinthians from this era. Only yesterday I was with one of them (she’s almost 92) as we chatted again about her life.

The players who went to South America are (with the ones I interviewed for the first edition of the book in bold). If you went on the tour or a member of your family did then please let me know. I’m still keen to capture more stories and don’t want to miss anybody out:

The trip was wonderful for the Corinthians with lots of new experiences. A chapter in the book covers the stories of many of the women who attended. I’m currently revising/updating it and the second edition of Manchester Corinthians: The Authorised History will be published this year.

As with the first edition this book will be non-profit. Also, anyone ordering a copy now will get their name published in the book as a supporter of the project. Copies can be ordered now (see below). This promises to build further on the original book, viewed as a landmark publication. Income from the book will continue to be used to promote these remarkable women; stage events for them and capture their stories for posterity. Over fifty Corinthians were interviewed for the first edition and others have been found and interviewed for this updated version. This includes additional Corinthians from the 1940s, adding to the three founding Corinthians interviewed for the first edition. Their voices are so important to the story of this remarkable club.

I’m determined to ensure all Corinthians are remembered so please also get in touch if you’re a Corinthian who may have slipped through the net somehow.

One Year On: The Manchester Corinthians Reunion

Manchester Corinthian Ladies FC Recognition @ The Women’s Football Awards 2026

I’m absolutely delighted to say the the incredible Manchester Corinthians will be honoured with recognition at the Women’s Football Awards on Thursday 7 May 2026. This is wonderful news and follows a special recognition award at the Manchester Sports Awards 2025, a lifetime achievement award at the North West Football Awards 2024 and even the Blue Plaque appeal was shortlisted at the This Is Manchester Awards 2024.

All of these awards help to ensure the Corinthians’ legacy will never be forgotten. The Women’s Football Award is special as it’s really important to remember the women who were there at the start of the club (including three special women who helped establish the club), those who played and those Corinthian women who played their part in the establishment of the Women’s FA, regional competition and also the establishment of the England Women international team. There are still Corinthians today contributing to coaching women and girls and also playing walking football. All deserve remembering and celebrating.

Former Manchester City and England footballer Toni Duggan (photographed below with Debbie Darbyshire and Kate Themen, two players with Manchester City at that club’s formation in 1988) recognises the significance of these women: ‘As an England women national football team player, you know you’re part of something bigger. But this wouldn’t have been possible for me or any of my former teammates without the likes of Manchester Corinthians. They are the reason that we are here today. Their courage and love for the beautiful game has paved the way for generations of players like me – it is an honour to see their story celebrated.’

A year ago this week several Corinthians were guests of Liverpool FC for a wonderful day (see images below) when they met the Liverpool women’s team and watched training. The former Liverpool FC men’s team player Jamie Carragher has commented this week: ‘The Women’s Football Awards will be celebrating a group of fearless pioneers who refused to accept the limits placed upon them. The Manchester Corinthians didn’t just play football – they changed it forever. Their legacy is present in every girl and woman who plays football today.

The Corinthians are wonderful people who toured the globe promoting Manchester, football and female endeavour over a forty year period.

In 2024 around ninety former players/families of former players were brought together for a reunion at the Etihad Stadium. You can find out more about the Corinthians and watch moments from their reunion, when they sang their club song, here:

The Corinthians at Liverpool

A year ago today (29 April 2025) Liverpool FC welcomed myself & several Manchester Corinthians to their women’s training facility at Melwood. The women who played for the Corinthians during the 50s-80s met the then current first team WSL squad of Liverpool; had a tour of the facilities; signed autographs (LFC wanted the Corinthians’ autographs and vice versa); and were given a wonderful lunch. I cannot stress highly enough how incredible the welcome was from LFC – all at LFC, not simply one or two people but everybody from security though to every area of the club.

The oldest Corinthian able to attend was 90 year old Centre-forward Mary Bee. Mary, along with Margaret Whitworth and Gill Holland who were also there, participated in a major international tournament in Venezuela in 1960 which the Corinthians won. She also played in the 1957 European Cup victory over Germany in Berlin (the Corinthians played as an unofficial England team). Others present today included players who had defeated Juventus in a major final in France in 1970.

Manchester Corinthian Ladies FC Recognition @ The Manchester Sports Awards 2025

I’m absolutely delighted to say the the incredible Manchester Corinthians have been honoured with a special recognition award at the Manchester Sports Awards 2025. Special thanks are due to Paul Hulme at MCRActive for all his efforts in making this happen. Paul has been a great supporter of all we have tried to do to recognise and promote the Corinthians’ stories over the last five years or so. He was extremely helpful when we established the Blue Plaque campaign a few years back and I know he put a lot of effort into making this award happen too.

The Corinthians are wonderful people who toured the globe promoting Manchester, football and female endeavour over a forty year period. I was sat with Corinthians who had played for the club in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. I was particularly pleased for Margaret Whitworth, Margaret Shepherd and Jan Lyons, who had worked hard over many years to get the stories of the club listened to and worked with me to get the Blue Plaque campaign established.

Altogether we managed to get 14 Corinthians at the event tonight (15 November 2025) – a fraction of the number we’ve found during my project to capture the stories of Corinthians from every season of the club’s history. Over 50 Corinthians have been interviewed by me and in December last year my wife Heidi (who played with some former Corinthians at Manchester City in the 80s and 90s) and I managed to get eighty former players/families of former players together for a Reunion at the Etihad Stadium. It was great to see them catch-up with each other.

The Corinthians as Guests of MCFC

Today a small group of Manchester Corinthians have been welcomed as guests of Manchester City to their WSL game with Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. It was a great gesture by the club and followed the staging of a reunion of the Corinthians held at the stadium last month.

The group included a 90 year old former player and others in their 70s and 80s. All of them inevitably appear in my book, Manchester Corinthians: The Authorised History (see below for details). Some of them also feature in this wonderfully produced video, filmed at the Corinthians reunion last month. For details of the video and to watch it see:
