Forty Years Ago Today: Nottingham Forest v Manchester City

15,140 watched as Manchester City defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the City Ground on 16 November 1985. The scorers were Paul Simpson and Clive Wilson. This photo shows City ‘keeper Eric Nixon and Forest defender Aiden Butterworth and clearly City managed to end this Forest attack. Nixon kept a clean sheet that day of course!

If you’d like to know more about City at this time, here’s a 2,500 word subscriber feature on the 1985-86 season. Enjoy!

Seattle Storm

On 27 May 1986 Billy McNeill’s Manchester City defeated Seattle Storm 1-0 as part of their post season North American tour. The City scorer was Mark Lillis and that season’s FA Youth Cup winners David White, Steve Redmond and Andy Hinchcliffe were in the starting 11. Other FA Youth Cup winners such as Ian Brightwell were also part of the official touring party. Here’s the starting 11 from my ledgers:

The 1980s: Join the Hamper Club

Today’s 1980s flashback is a brief reminder from the Manchester City match programme for this day (29 December) in 1984 when City defeated Wolves 4-0 (yes, another day of beating Wolves at Christmas) at Maine Road.

The goalscorers were Graham Baker, David Phillips, Gordon Smith and Clive Wilson but today’s reminder isn’t really about the game it’s about this programme advert for the MCFC Hamper Club. That’s right City’s Development Association used to have a hamper club whereby you could save all year and receive an hamper full of items you might just need over Christmas, like a tin of ham or real fruit jellies!

Did you join City’s hamper club? My family used to get one from Park Hampers, not City sadly! Now, back to the football…

A ‘Keeper’s Debut

On this day (23 November) in 1957 Manchester City goalkeeper Steve Fleet made his debut in a 4-3 defeat by League leaders Wolves. I’ve met and interviewed Steve often over the years and here’s a 2,500 interview I did with him where he talks about the circumstances around his debut, the game (it was an extraordinary match) and the rest of his career. I’ve also included a match report. Enjoy!
