Haaland Goals Per Game Comparison

It doesn’t feel that long ago since I did something like this for Sergio Aguero and I honestly felt it would be some time before the opportunity came again but then Erling Haaland arrived at Manchester City. So much was rightly made of Erling scoring his 100th Premier League goal last night that I thought I’d post a comparison between him and all other players who have netted 100 Premier League goals. Instead of totals though I decided to focus on the goals per game ratio and so here is a list of the top 25 goals per game ratios of PL players who have netted 100 goals or more. There are some amazing players on this list but significantly Haaland tops that list by some distance. It’s also gratifying to see that Aguero is third on the list.

50 Goals in a Season

On this day (30 April) in 2023 Erling Haaland became the first Manchester City player ever to score 50 goals in a season when he scored a 3rd minute penalty (awarded for a foul on Alvarez) against Fulham. Haaland converted the penalty with a left footed shot to the bottom right corner. Not only was this his 50th competitive goal of the season but it was also his 34th Premier League goal, which equalled the record seasonal Premier League tally. The record had been held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

City ended up winning the game 2-1 with World Cup winner Julian Alvarez scoring the second for the Blues with a 25 yard strike in the 36th minute. That victory put City top, overtaking Arsenal. The Blues were on 76 points from 32 games while Arsenal were a point behind and had played one further game.

After the match manager Pep Guardiola was told by a journalist that Haaland had now scored the most goals by a top-flight player for 92 years (Tom ‘Pongo’ Waring reached 50 for Aston Villa in 1930-31) when Ramsay MacDonald was the Prime Minister. Pep responded: ‘Before Winston Churchill was prime minister? Wow. Sounds a long time ago.’

He added: ‘Congratulations to Erling. The best goals to help us achieve what we want is still [to come] there. I was really impressed that he took the penalty with the strong mentality he has.’

50 Goals in a Season

Haaland’s Strikes

Tomorrow Manchester City face Arsenal in the League and there’s the possibility that national goalscoring records could be broken once again. A few weeks back I calculated that if Erling Haaland maintained a goal a game ratio in the remaining League fixtures for Manchester City he would better Tommy Johnson’s 38 goal tally by a goal. Since then Haaland, who is already City’s seasonal record scorer in all competitions, has indeed kept up that ratio – in fact he has surpassed it – and has now broken another barrier: 30 League goals in a season.

Charlton Defeated

On this day (4 December) in 2005 goals from Andy Cole (2), Trevor Sinclair, Joey Barton and Darius Vassell helped Stuart Pearce’s Manchester City to a 5-2 victory at Charlton Athletic.
