The 1970s: Corrigan Congratulates Opposition ‘Keeper

On this day (20 February) in 1971 Manchester City played out a goalless game at West Ham United. Often games without goals are perceived as dull but this match was full of goal action – even if no actual goals were scored. The brilliance of West Ham’s ‘keeper ensured Manchester City could not score and at the end of the game City’s Joe Corrigan ensured he congratulated Ferguson, even if Malcolm Allison joked that he had no idea who journalists were talking about when they asked him about the Hammers’ goalie.
